Institute For Development Studies (IDS), University Of Nairobi, Kenya Transport Research Network (KTRN)/JICA Study Team (JST) Forum #1
Public transportation is an essential service and necessary in the development process of a nation.
For a developing country city, like Nairobi, where most people do not own private automobiles, public transport plays an important role in mobility and movement of people and goods. Most Nairobi residents rely on public transport for their day to day activities. Unfortunately, public transportation in Nairobi is faced with various problems and challenges that result in inefficiency of the system and deterioration of public transport services. The main causes of these problems include: inadequacy and poor maintenance of existing public transport infrastructure; concentration of economic activities, employment, and other activities within the central business district (CBD) and Industrial areas of the city with the resulting high volumes of people and goods moving to the CBD who cannot efficiently be accommodated; inadequate supply of public transport services to meet the high and increasing demand; and poor traffic management and integration of various modes of public transport.
The Institute for Development Studies (IDS), University of Nairobi - Kenya Transport Research Network (KTRN) jointly with the JICA Study Team (JST) which is working on the Project on Detailed Planning of Integrated Transport System and Loop Line in the Nairobi Urban Core, have organised a KTRN forum in September 2017. The aim of this forum is to generate discussions on improvement of mobility and mass transit systems in Kenya. Results of ongoing JICA ‘mass transit study’ will be presented so as to shed light on the importance of transportation planning in Kenya as a precursor to public transport management and coordination.
The event will take place at the JICA Kenya Offices, 16th Floor, Rahimtula Towers, off Upper Hill Road on 20th September 2.00pm - 4.30pm. Interested participants are requested to register by latest 13th September 2017 at 1400H.
